Dean Ellis was born in Detroit, Michigan and studied at the Cleveland School of Art from 1939 to 1942 and with Karl Zerbe at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts from 1946 to1947. His work is owned by the Cleveland Museum of Art and in many private collections.

Dean Ellis (1920-2009) was born in Detroit, Michigan, and served as an infantryman in the Pacific during WWII. He received his formal art training at the Cleveland Institute of Art, with postgraduate work at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art. In 1950, Life magazine included Ellis in a list of the 19 most promising young American artists.
